805. OBITUARIES W. T. Downing: long a leader in amateur sports William T. Downing, 70, of 128 Walnut Lynn, died yesterday in a Lynn nursing home.

He was active for many years in amateur athletics and was a past president of the N.E. Amateur Athletic Assn. and headed their boxing committee. He was a lifelong resident of Lynn and worked as a timekeeper for the Massachusetts Electric Co. until he retired in 1968.

Mr. Downing promoted many boxing shows in Lynn. He operated weekly boxing matches out of the old Lynn Arena on Western avenue for years. He also managed the Boston Red farm team, the Lynn Red Sox, when they played at Frazer Field. Mr.

Downing was active with Amateur Athletic Union boxing championships in Boston. In 1973 the National AAU presented him with the Man of the Year Award. He leaves a sister, Mary T. Downing of Lynn. A funeral Mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m.
